Another Chance to Show Your ‘A’ Game when it comes to supporting your hometown
Here we are again. Another holiday season beckons us to the craziness that has become and is this time of year. Shopping lists, cooking lists for both home and holiday get-togethers, decorations, holiday cards and more await us in a swarm of activity that moves us through the next several weeks at a dizzying pace. Easy to lose both lots of time and money trying to keep up with it all. I have a suggestion, a suggestion I put toward last year at this time that I believe deserves another sound off as I write to you through the pages. This Saturday, November 10th at the Quakertown High School cafeteria enjoy some breakfast, slow down with family and friends. While you eat know you’re helping your neighbors.
Quakertown Cares helps area families in need and area seniors that need assistance and this is your chance, our chance to make a difference and not only make a holiday brighter for our neighbors but in the process getting that great holiday spirit started off on the right foot for ourselves, by simply eating a meal and helping others simultaneously. This Saturday’s breakfast directly benefits Quakertown Cares and what a great thing this is to have in our community. I have to say last year I was able to be at the breakfast from early on through the morning and the turnout wasn’t what it could be. I’ll put it bluntly, last year’s turnout was weak. I know we all have obligations and lots of people who want your time and your money, that said I can’t encourage each of my readers ( hopefully there’s more than a few of you ) to stand up and take the bull by the horns and support this great organization by attending breakfast this Saturday at Quakertown High.
It’s been some time but you’ve heard it said before by me how I’ve learned through my adult years. You can either live in a community or live in and be part of your community. People who live among us and don’t take some part in helping neighbors, especially when it’s this simple by just enjoying a breakfast are takers. That may be harsh but it’s how I see it and this is after all my view. If you have a genuine reason that you can’t make it this Saturday to support Quakertown Cares at this breakfast that’s understandable. But if you missed last year and planning on missing this year because you figure others we’ll take your spot and do the supporting of this worthy cause then shame on you.
The holidays have turned into a marketing fraud. Trying not to sound like a bitter malcontent I have become a real scrooge in many aspects when it comes to the holidays. Thanksgiving as you know is my favorite holiday. The most under rated and best of them on the calendar. Christmas has been put on us as though if you don’t spend more than years past, have the biggest and best most up-to-date toys and goodies then somehow it’s a lack luster holiday. That’s a load of bunk. The holidays now looming aren’t at all about what’s on the gift list for ourselves are others. The lights, the decorations all of the hullabaloo are meant to enhance not replace the true meaning of the Christmas spirit. That Christmas spirit lives and thrives in things such as those going on this Saturday in Quakertown High School’s Cafeteria starting at 8am. It’s about helping each other, our neighbors, our seniors and in a most meaningful way, ourselves. Showing each other that the priority in a community is its most precious resource; people.
I plan on arriving sometime after 8, enjoy a breakfast and lend a hand. I have an early morning commitment then I’ll be there and hope to see many of you as well. I know this paper, The Free Press, is solidly behind this great effort as are many other area companies. That’s all good, now it’s time for you to do your part and step up, grab a big plate of great breakfast food and help out Quakertown Cares.
One more thing to think about as I get off my soap box, it’s not unthinkable that you or someone you know could someday be in a position to need a hand from Quakertown Cares and heaven forbid that occurs you can take solace in knowing you did your part to help someone you love or maybe even yourself. I can’t call you personally and invite you. If I had the time and resources I might do just that. But I’ll trust you’ll take my strong suggestion and get to Quakertown High’s Cafeteria this Saturday for breakfast. I have poor memories of last year’s breakfast. The food was great, The Quakertown Senior Center Band was entertaining and those of us that made it had a grand time. Where were you? If you were there, come back. If you weren’t I want to see your face in the place Saturday. We as a community are better than last year’s turnout. Way better. Till Saturday enjoy the remainder of your week ,and see ya around town(especially this Saturday). |
